Ellora is famous for the largest single monolithic excavation in the world. The most notable monument is cave 16, the Kailasa temple which represents the culmination of rock-cut architecture, with huge sculptural artworks. It conveys the symbolism of the temple as cosmic mountain and as the home of Shiva.
Who built them?
>It took many years to build those temple. It is difficult to understand which dynasties sponsored the construction work. It is believed that the Rashtrakutas and the Chalukyas were instrumental in building those temples.
The caves were excavated from volcanic rock along a 2km stretch of west-facing embankments. The rock formation, on weathering hes given rise to the appearance of terraces with flat summit. At Ellora one can also have a glimpse of channels through which the volcanic lava once flpwed. These channels, due to overheating have a characteristic brownish colour.
